1. Can a family survive on an income near the poverty line? Why or why not?
It would be extremely hard for a family to survive or depend on an income near the poverty line. For instance, in 2012, the poverty line for a family of four was $23,492, but now (2018) it is only $24,600. Therefore, families with low income must be on an extreme budget because they still have to buy food, clothing, pay bills, etc.
2. In what ways does growing up in a poor family limit the chances of children to succeed as adults?
In my opinion, children who grow up in a poor family can have a high chance to succeed as adults. Most want more for themselves and are very ambitious to prosper because they wouldn’t want their family to go through what they went through. Therefore, it is unfortunate for kids survive on low income, yet it could be a learning experience or create motivation for them. However, some or most kids who do grow up poor may not always succeed as adults because they lost hope at such a young age.
3. Would you support policies or programs to assist a family like this? What should be done?
I would most definitely support programs or polices to assist a family living in poverty. There’s a lot that can be done to help those in need of food, water clothes, shelter and money. Therefore, to fix that problem people should donate more, create fundraisers & stop wasting food. For instance, in America there are 49 million Americans struggling to put food on the table, while 40% of food (billions worth) is being thrown out!
