In both novels Nineteen Eighty-Four and Animal Farm there are many similarities. Three chief subjects. which will be discussed in this essay. are: control. isolation. and rebellion. The regulating powers in each society of the two novels use control and isolation as tools for stamp downing rebellion to guarantee their reign of the societal authorization for future old ages to come.
In Nineteen Eighty-Four. the authorities. besides known as “the Party” . controls the society Winston lives in. This takes topographic point near the eastern side of the universe and it is separated into three countries: Eurasia. Eastasia and Oceania. These three lands are invariably at war with each other and are controlled by different governors. Winston lives in Oceania and the Party’s leader is person named “Big Brother” . No 1 has of all time seen this individual before. but is said to be. The Party abolishes every type of art including the art of holding free will. These abilities were destroyed. smothered. and obliterated through careful agencies. and anyone holding them was stated insane. unsafe. and antisocial. To forestall these Torahs from being broken. the Party brainwash people and have “Telescreens” that can supervise everyone’s actions and a security undertaking force called “Thought Police” to implement these Torahs with anguish and hurting.
“The Thought Police would acquire him merely the same. He had committed. even if he had ne’er set pen to paper. the indispensable offense that contained all others in itself. Thoughtcrime. they called it. Thoughtcrime could non be concealed everlastingly. You might dodge successfully for a piece. even for old ages. but sooner or later they ware bound to acquire you” ( pg. 166 )
The Thought Police are so feared that even Winston is afraid to interrupt any of the Torahs. He knows he wants to compose. but is already afraid before he even starts. This is how the Party suppresses the society.
Similarly. in Animal Farm. “control” is involved with its society as good. The animate beings portrayed in this fresh represent human existences. The hogs are the smartest animate beings in the farm and they take control and pull strings the other animate beings to make their dirty work. One of the hogs. Napoleon. has taken the throne of power with force and he controls the farm by utilizing all the animate beings for his ain benefit. Like Nineteen Eighty-Four. there are Torahs in Animal Farm. but as clip goes by they are changed and shaped to his liking. To implement Napoleon’s manner of life. he uses barbarous Canis familiariss ( which he raises from birth ) to stamp down the society ( the animate beings ) . The Canis familiariss are merely like the “Thought Police” in Nineteen Eighty-Four.
“All that twelvemonth the animate beings worked like slaves. But they were happy in their work ; they grudged no attempt or forfeit. good cognizant that everything they did was for the benefit of themselves and those of their sort who would come after them. and non for a battalion of idle. hooking human existences. ” ( pg. 51 )
Bonaparte and the Party are the same. They both control the society with use or control and anyone who does non follow their regulations. are dealt with.
Isolation in Nineteen Eighty-Four. is displayed by the whole society itself. It can be seen through the Torahs of each land and how the wars between them. The Party invariably tells the society false information to maintain them where they are. It tries to maintain the population from go forthing their land and traveling to another. even though it is impossible since every other land is every bit stray. The society is invariably given false information about their land being in war with this one to scare the people. The Party attempts to maintain the society separated from other 1s to guarantee that no other power can subvert them. For illustration. if another land were to derive a higher population. they would hold more power and more control. Thus. demoing the Party’s isolation.
“Once when he happened in some connexion to advert the war against Eurasia. she startled him by stating casually that in her sentiment the war was non go oning. The projectile bombs which fell daily on London were likely fired by the Government of Oceania itself. “just to maintain people frightened” . ” ( pg. 154 )
Merely the same. Animal Farm. is isolated. The animate beings take over the farm and they keep themselves off from the worlds. They even change the original name of the farm to “Animal Farm” one time they have taken it over. The farm is isolated from the remainder of the society. The animate beings in the farm are separated and even have their ain governors. In the farm. the animate beings believe that all animate beings are companions and the lone enemy against them is “man” . They believed that they were better off without the worlds and that they would populate even better lives than the worlds.
“The animate beings were happy as they had ne’er conceived it possible to be. Every mouthful of nutrient was an acute positive pleasance. now that it was genuinely their ain nutrient. produced by themselves and for themselves. non doled out to them by a grudging master” ( pg. 24 )
The animate beings are isolated from the worlds and now that they are. they believe that they are genuinely happier and productive than they were in the yesteryear.
Many of the people in Nineteen Eighty-Four are brainwashed and are made to believe that they are populating a comfortable life. The people have no thought that the universe they live in is really a prevarication. except for Winston. who believes otherwise. Inside his bosom. he hates the Party even though he works for them. His work is to bring forth false information and present it to the society. Winston hates this. therefore taking him to arise. To contend against the Party. there is a group led by a adult male named “Goldenstein” and the lone intent of the group is to halt the Party. In the terminal the rebellion is useless and nil really comes good out of it. Nothing can alter the Party and nil will.
“He was walking down the white-tiled corridor. with the feeling of walking in sunshine. and an armed guard at his dorsum. The long-hoped-for slug was come ining his encephalon? He loved Big Brother” ( pg. 300 )
Even though Winston has joined the rebellion. it is shown that it won’t win. The rebellion is proven that it won’t win in this quotation mark. Winston represents the rebellion in general and the slug represents the Party. The slug has entered Winston’s encephalon and has killed him. merely like how the Party will kill the rebellion.
Similarly. Animal Farm has a rebellious group. Like Nineteen Eighty-Four. the animate beings represented the Rebels and that “man” represented the Party. “Man” . merely like the Party. had complete control over the farm. Then the animate beings decided it was clip. and raged war with “man” . The difference is that the animate beings did really subvert the authorities unlike the Rebels in Nineteen Eighty-Four. but the Rebels in both novels still have the same end.
“Man is the lone animal that consumes without bring forthing. He does non give milk. he does non put eggs. he is excessively weak to draw the Big Dipper. he can non run fast plenty to catch coneies. Yet he is Godhead of all the animate beings. He sets them to work. he gives back to them the bare lower limit that will forestall them from hungering. and the remainder he keeps for himself” ( pg. 7 )
The animate beings rebel for same grounds as Winston did. They are populating in a universe where they are all mistreated.
To sum it up. there are many similarities between Nineteen Eighty-Four and Animal Farm. Both powers in each novel have complete control of the society. and use isolation and force to repress them. This ceaseless battle for control will ne’er halt and any alteration will merely ensue in a big rhythm taking back to the same jobs.
