The United States has over the years produced a long list of groups involved in terrorist activities in the world. The onslaught of 9/11 saw the intensified campaigns against terror with the United States using all means possible to woo and cajole nations to join in eliminating terrorists from the face of the world. The differences in the terrorism definition not withstanding. The need for a multi-faceted approach to tackle terrorism has been identified. The world not just the United States needs to restricture their policies in a way that they respond to the prevailing circumstances.
Western interests are the most threatened. These countries ranging from France, Germany and Britain should be at the forefront to enact measures meant to provide a solution to this menace. A general survey across the American population has over time indicated that most have rated WMD attack as one of the key reasons to their feeling insecure. Weapons of mass destruction have a long history depending on how one might look at them. Weapons of mass destruction generally refer to the modern weaponry ranging form biological chemical and nuclear with a capability of mass annihilation. However, modern application dates back to the First World War where the Germans in Belgium used them.
Nuclear weapons were first used by the United States against the Japanese leading to thousands of death and the complete wiping out of Nagasaki and Hiroshima signaling the end of Second World War. This would later lead to weaponry build up by the U. S and the U. S. S. R in the cold war.
Before maybe looking at how the terrorism can come to acquire the WMD, it is important to note the reason behind the development of the weapons in the first place.WMD weaponry despite their capabilities are conveniently made to serve a multiplicity of purposes depending on a specific country, while some may do it as a matter of national security. Others do it as a sign of pride, maintain world leadership or deter other countries from launching an attack. The second half of the 20th century saw an increase in the number of countries that were developing WMDs and not even the non-proliferations treaty could stop them. Countries like Pakistan and India have acquired these weapons despite the many treaties meant to curb the same.
There is a wider speculation that the numbers of those countries with for example nuclear weapons are many. It is the crumbling of the communist bloc in 1999 that renewed fears of the WMDs falling in the wrong hands. The wrong hands in this case being the terrorists. Dictatorial leaders are lumped together with the terrorists by the U. S. acquisition of these dangerous weapons spell doom not only to the United States but also to the world at large. The past has witnessed these weapons being applied even in the conventional war, what would prevent the terrorists using them if they lay their hands on them?(Jonathan B, 2000). Since the 9/11 all security systems and intelligence have been put into alert.
WMD attack has remained the most likely fatal attack on the U. S these last years (Garvin C, 1999). Millions of dollars continue to be spent toward stepping up security. This issue continues to dominate headlines all over the nation. However, experts in the filed have continued to downplay the threat but maintain that if it happens it will result to a very high casualty.Today’s terrorism has taken a religious direction and consequently heightened the emotions and the intensity of the terrorist’s viciousness. Scholars have singled out this factor as the one that intensifies this threat.
Comparing the modern with the traditional nature of terrorism reveals that while the past terrorist groups were in pursuit of nationalistic and ideological goals, were more organized with distinct and identified structures, the new terrorists have ad hoc organization and are spontaneous in their actions (Mark J, 2001).Traditional terrorist groups maintain cohesion and identification with a particular group of society; their actions are moderated, as they have to maintain a synchrony with their goals. Many admit that the levels of killings witnessed today are not identifiable with the traditional form of terrorism. Religion is being blamed as being used as the base of motivation intended to fuel animosity and justifying it on a just cause. Terrorism coalesced with religion ensures total loyalty on the group members as it takes a completely new meaning (Garvin C, 1999).
