A famous man once said “all power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely”. Napoleon, the leader in animal farm, proved this statement true when he strived to obtain absolute power. This lead him to lose all his sense of right and wrong, turning him into a corrupt and selfish leader, napoleon had proven himself power hungry by breaking rules and misusing his authority, spreading lies to influence followers view to gain more power, and lastly breaking the seven commandments and altering them to justify his wrong doings. Firstly, Napoleon has absolute power because of this he knows he can break the rules, and misuse his authority for his personal gain. Napoleon uses violence he breaks the rules like “no animal shall kill” when he begins to realize thats animals like the hens are starting to rebel. With this he believes that he will lose power if the hens get to the others so he decides get rid of them by killing the hens by sending the dogs to kill the hens for their rebellion “the dogs promptly tore their throats out” (pg.25) misusing his authority that he has of controlling the rest of animals. and he also squashes the hen rebellion by cutting off their food rations, causing a number of hens to die of starvation because he believed his power will be lost Therefore showing that napoleon broke the rules of the commandments and missed use his authority when sending the dogs to kill the hens because his power corrupt him into wanting the power so much he would kill for it if anyone got in the way. The dictator of Animal Farm, Napoleon uses Squealer to spread incorrect information to the crowd in order to influence the public’s opinion. Napoleon convienses the public against Snowball with saying “Suppose you had decided to follow Snowball, with his moonshine of windmills Snowball, who, as we now know, was no better than a criminal?” (Pg.19). The lies, and false information that are created by Napoleon targeted toward Snowball blatantly corrupt the truth about him. For example, Napoleon directs Squealer to tell the other animals of about the lies made up about Snowball , actions during the recent war. The animals believed that Snowball, shot one of his own kind. However, this is not true at all. In fact, Snowball was the bravest and most valiant warrior in this war. Although the other animals knew this from witnessing his actions during the war, they believed the false information since Squealer persuade them. Therefore, the public was turned against Snowball due to lies made up by Napoleon. Napoleon enforces The Seven Commandments statements such as, “Whatever goes up on two legs is an enemy, No animal shall wear clothes, No animal shall drink alcohol, and No animal shall kill any other animal”. By the end of the book, he individually breaks all of these rules for his and the pigs benefit. He even, uses his power to alter the commandments in order to justify his wrong actions. For an example he alters all animals are equal to “ALL ANIMALS ARE EQUAL, BUT SOME ARE MORE EQUAL THAN OTHERS” (Pg, 90) . To justify the pigs wrong doings of the pigs being treated better than the other animals. Napoleon and the pigs discovered the fun and comfort of human habits such as beds and alcohol so they alter the rules of Animalism to allow themselves comfort while denying them to the other animals. They treated themselves as royalty in comparison to the other animals. The pigs were able to relax while all the other animals had to kill themselves to work. The pigs, especially Napoleon, had the most control over the farm and had absolute power over the other animals and established themselves as the ruling class in the Animal Farm. thus showing napoleon was becoming selfish and corrupt.Napoleon strived for absolute power. His manipulation and ambition lead him to grow to be corrupt and selfish. He shows these characteristics by misusing his authority for personal reasons, telling lies to his followers and changing rules commandments to justify his corrupted way. This proving that one who has too much power can lose the sense of right and wrong so that morals do not matter. Absolute power corrupts those who possess it.
