Chapter3  Methodology            This study made used of descriptiveresearch. It describes the research design, research locale, subject participants,research instruments, data gathering procedure, data analysis and the researchethics.

ResearchDesign          This study utilized a phenomenologicalmethod, to highlight the lived experiences of single mother in raising theirchildren and sought to identify and understand their coping strategies.Lester,(2011), stated that a qualitative research method intended to understand thepeoples’ experiences, perspective, and understanding of a particular situation andthrough the description provided by the people that were involved in the study.This study normally translates into gathering data, deep information and perceptionssuch as interviews, discussions.However,this study was intended to describe and to interpret the lived experiences andcoping strategies of single mothers in raising their children using deep andinductive thoughts. ResearchLocale          This study was conducted in Purok 8, Barangay9 Malaybalay City Bukidnon.

Malaybalay City has 46 barangays. It includesBarangay 9, that consist, of 8 Purok with an estimated total population of9,022 residents. Some people living in Barangay 9 are considered part ofdiverse  ethnic groups in the Philippines.These are, Cebuanos, Ilonggos, Warays, andMuslims. Barangay 9 was one of the 20 Barangays created during the MarcosRegime under the declaration of Martial Law by virtue of Presidential Decree 86and 86-A.Under the administration of the late Hon. Mayor Timoteo C.

Ocaya, theMunicipal Council passed resolutions number 246-74 and 294-74 and ImplementingOrdinance No. 87-74 by reducing the number of barangays from 20 to elevenbarangays. The merging of some barangays affected the political boundaries suchthat Barangay 16 became Barangay 9. Despite the diversity of culture, thepeople live in unity and peace, observing and respecting their own differentcultures. Majority of the people are Muslims and Christians.Interms of livelihood, majority have micro-enterprises like sari-sari store, carenderia,and junkshop.

Some of them preferred motorela driving as part of theirlivelihood and as a way of transportation. Majority of Barangay 9 residents areMuslims, and the Barangay is considered as the Islamic center in Bukidnon. TheBus terminal and the Market are also found in Barangay 9.               Figure 2. The first interview guide question sought to determine the participantslived experiences of single mother in raising their children.

The secondinterview guide questions determined the coping mechanism of single mothers interms of economic hardship, emotional or psychological aspect in response totheir lived experiences. DataGatheringIngathering the data, the researchers conducted an individual interview with the participantson how they raise their children and how they come up a solution to provide theneeds of their children. The researchers interview the participants with aharmonious way and it was audio- recorded with note-taking of the details that occurredduring the interview. Data AnalysisThisstudy utilized themes and frames. The data and information gathered by theresearchers from the interviews were analysed based on the lived experiences ofsingle mothers in raising their children, and the quality of the participant’s responsesin the in-depth- interview. Research Ethics Theresearchers considered several research ethics in conducting the study such asinformed consent from the participants, respect and accept whatever the answerswere given and protect the confidentiality of information. It was one way ofprotecting the information given by the subject participants.

          Before conducting an interview, theresearchers explained the purpose and objectives of the study. It was for thesubject participants to be able to understand the questions asked by theresearchers. Theresearchers set significant consideration on the research ethics especially inasking the subject participants about some personal questions and putting moreimportance to the responses of the subject participants. Through this researchethics the subject participants will not be harmed.
