Countless hours of those tired eyes staring at huge piles of assigned homework. As the year go by more and more homework is being assigned to children. This is causing kids to go into depression and stress for long periods of time. Only a little homework should be assigned to children because they need time to spend with their parents and take care of responsibilities at home. One of the major reasons to why less homework should be assigned to children is because they deserve to have extracurricular time after a long day of school. Since students spend most of their time in the classroom, they should be able to relax. Students are losing their coveted time to anything else because “Homework prevents students from discovering what they really enjoy doing.”(Strauss) Even if students finish their homework, they are too tired to do anything else. Also, students need extracurricular time, ¨The need time to participate in activities they enjoy” (Strauss). Not only does this make teens’ schedule more flexible, but also takes their mind off boring homework. Another reason to why kids should get less homework is to reduce theirs, and their family´stress level . “Homework causes stress for families when the student doesn’t want to work on an assignment. Parents may feel pressure to force the child to do the homework, which can cause arguments, tears, and frustration”(Strauss). Not only that, but also students need to get a good night’s sleep after a day of hard work. “Homework can be stressful, for both kids and their parents. In a poll by the National Sleep Foundation, one in four parents said their child had lost sleep because of homework. A lack of sleep can affect how well kids do in school.Plus, kids devote much of their day to school. They need time to spend with family and friends.” (Everett). A lack of sleep can affect a students grades and performance in school, which can lead to more stress. Even though there are reasons to why homework is bad for kids, there are also reasons to why homework is good for a student. “In addition to giving you more time to learn, homework lets you practice learning independently and teaches responsibility. Without a teacher and classmates at home to help, you only have yourself to rely on.”(Everett). “Some people say that homework teaches responsibility. But students who have homework every night have less time to contribute to their responsibilities at home”. (Everett) Because of homework, students are losing time to take care of other responsibilities because of only schoolwork. In conclusion, too much homework can be stressful to kids and can impact their grades severely. Kids should receive only a little because they need to spend time with their parents and take care of responsibilities at home. The next time you assign someone too much homework, think about all these reasons to how it could negatively impact them.
