Advertising a product is indeed the best way to increase the sales and profits for a company. With these, you are able to spread the information about certain merchandise that you offer the people. They will know what they could expect to get when they buy the product that you’re offering them. But there could be other underlying importance in putting out these advertisements.
It could be relevant to the society, like promoting an idea or an event, and these proves to be an effective way to do so. These advertisements are also timely, choosing what time they would broadcast and considering the number of people viewing when they air these advertisements. One example of events that encourage advertisements is sporting events.
These times are usually those with a lot of viewing audience that is why it is the perfect time to air certain product endorsements and commercials. They are assured of having a viewing population which is in front of television sets, eagerly anticipating the results of the games they are tuned into. These sporting events may encourage a national or global following, wherein people around the country or around the world are surely tuned in, watching everything that is happening from their TV sets. This is the perfect time for these advertisers to show these commercials. The sporting event that will be the focus of this paper is the NCAA final four competitions. It is a yearly event that has a great viewing population and a media following, which is a characteristic that endorsers and advertisers are looking into.
This year’s NCAA is in line with the Winter Olympics, a very good opportunity to showcase various advertisements and endorsements to the viewing public. The advertisements are more globally-themed, since it is not just a national event but a global event at that. The merchandise at playWith the upcoming National Collegian Athletic Association (NCAA) competition, there have been controversies as to the types of commercials that will be allowed air in between commercials. Organizations like the CSPI or the Center for Science and Public Interest is pushing to prohibit alcohol advertisements from airing on locally produced college sports telecast. In recent years in the mega-brewer Anheuser-Busch has been donating millions of dollars to the NCAA saying that they are just doing their share in helping rebuild public schools and alleviating the state of education in America. However an average citizen needs to look deeply into the scenario – one might ask so what if they include commercials on alcoholic beverages? It’s not the commercials that we are watching anyway, it’s the game that’s we are here for. Sounds pretty logical don’t you think?Much of commercials during breaks are of sports equipments, fast food chains, shampoos and etc so what’s wrong with allowing the mega-brewer Anheuser-Busch to air their commercials? According to the CSPI, by allowing there commercials to be aired, it defeats the purpose of the activity, and that is to promote education to the students.
Alcohol and Sports as they would put it, do not belong together as according to surveys, 500,000 students per year suffer from alcohol-related injuries including 70,000 college students who are victims of alcohol related sexual assaults. Miller light on the other hand has been airing during breaks despite the outright protest of some couches and faculty staff. Miller light which runs on the theme “Miller time” is an advertisement that clearly promotes drinking.
Aside from that fact, it also was gender biased as only men had a “Miller Time” in a bar therefore promoting Male Dominance. On the issue of race, it was biased not on the African Americans but on the different cultural minorities such as Asians, Indians and etc that were not included in the advertisement. Knowing the fact that commercials help a lot in promoting a product and increasing sales, then allowing it to be aired in college sports telecast with the college students as an audience, they become the target buyers of the commercials. It has then become a question of ethics.
Why would you encourage students to buy beer? Alcohol has indeed taken a fiery seat in the NCAA.Next would be the advertisements by the Mc Donald’s Company… On the issue of globalization this company is indeed a perfect example of world denomination. Being the company that patented the assembly type of food production, it has allowed its business to prosper even in remote cities. Its advertisements promote American Living where everything is fast, easy, and on time, perfectly suited in ones lifestyle. Their advertisement was globally themed as they know that different people watch the game and it will therefore hinder their aim for globalization if they were to air nationally themed commercials. One example is the advertisement with the theme “release the child within” which merged their target audience from workaholics to children freely playing around. It was globally themed by the fact that the commercial included children of different colors and people of different jobs.
Mc Donald’s is a company that has perfected the craft of advertising.Seizing the opportunityThese sporting events are really a big way of reaching the people. Merchandisers can take advantage of this time so to reach their viewers, thus improving the their sales or ratings, because of the high viewing population which doesn’t really intend to watch these commercials, instead they are there to enjoy the game. But commercials and advertisements are really a part of the television business. It is the life and blood of the industry, and big time arrangements like these sporting events mean a lot to them. But we should also take into consideration the underlying message it could connect to the public. We should always be aware of what we watch and should be essentially responsible viewers.
We have a choice, and it wouldn’t hurt if we could use the remote, after all, with the world we are living in, viewer discretion is really advised.
