A typical American childhood is riddled with lessons that make one tougher and able to handle anything that life has to throw at him. My childhood was relatively peaceful. My parents, although neither graduated from high school, worked hard to be able to provide the best of what they could afford for their children.
My own high school years were riddled with typical teenager problems and experiences. My education was not a strong point for me back then. I made my parents proud the day I graduated with a BA in Business from Saint Leo University. They did not mind that I had only an average GPA. College was a real learning experience for me.
It trained to develop a stronger work ethic and sense of community. These are the traits that I brought into the Marine service with me.I joined the Marines back when I was a High School student and have since served 12 years of duty with the Marine Corps. I rose within the military ranks with my peers. Currently, I am a Captain in charge of 170 people. It is definitely a challenge for me to be able to handle such a large unit that is composed of such diverse backgrounds, races, and religions. Being a marine taught me to tap into my leadership abilities in order to keep my unit functioning at one hundred percent efficiency.
In my mind, running an efficient unit is the same as managing a business and making sure that it runs like a well oiled and calibrated machine. My work ethic and sense of community were also further honed and developed in the name of service to mankind. Being a Marine forces you to grow up fast because of all the things you see and situations you have to deal with.
. So, I believe that I have become maturer than others have in my age bracket At present, a compelling need to give back to my community by means of mentoring has led me to serve as a volunteer with the Career Literacy African American Youths program with Duquesne UniversityI plan to serve in the Marines for 20 years and have currently completed 8 service years. I plan to retire then and join the civilian sector. It is my intention to set up my own business in order to serve my home community.
Having an MBA in Business Administration under my belt when I start my business will insure that I will be able to run my company properly and efficiently. As well as manage my employees and deal with my associates in a less military like manner.
