Explain what is meant by Wine of Astonishment when say how it relates to what takes place in the West Indies novel.
The name Wine of Astonishment derived from Psalm 60:3. Thou hast shown thy people hard things: thou hast made us to drink the wine of astonishment. The people might have been through hard times like the people of Bonasse.
Things were not going the way that they like. That was the meaning of shown thy people hard things. The wine of astonishment might mean to weaken the people, to take away their senses, and made them unfit for anything. If a person drinks too much, he will get drunk. What will happen when he get drunk? He might not have his correct senses, weak, and did not know what is the correct choice and action.
Therefore the people are weakened when unfortunate events happen to them. Most people drink because they are afraid to confront their problems. That’s why some people go to a bar to take a drink after a day of hard work.It relieves the pressure. It might be related when the Spiritual Baptists are limited of their actions by the law. Therefore everything is starting to downfall for them.
That’s when they are weakened. The young people leave and others started to attend Christian. They are yet still afraid to confront the problem and started to avoid the problem by running. They moved all over the place and yet did not solve the problem.
The police still looked for them. It didn’t put the end to the problem and made them look inferior and weak.
