In this short story, Sandra Cisneros introduces us toRachel a 11-year-old that is having a tough time accepting the fact that she isnow 11 years old. She uses a first person kind of perspective in this story aswell as and a shift from internal monologue todialogue to characterize Rachel as intelligent, but immature at the same time. Throughoutthe story Sandra Utilizes many literary devices for example one is simile;Rachel describes the red sweater as ugly, stretched out, once the teacher makesher put it on she also adds that the sweaters smell is similar or like cottagecheese. I think that the author used a simile in the store to describe thefeeling and events going on within the story. The first few paragraphs focus onRachel’s thoughts.
The author uses a first person point of view to presentRachel’s view that aging is paragraph dedicated to some of personalexperiences, feelings, and tendencies. Similes are used to develop this idea.Maturation is described to layers of an onion and rings in a tree trunk thisshows that every ring is a year that counts like she does in the book which isa form of alliteration which is the repetition of a sentence or phrase.Rachel’s understanding nature is demonstrated when the reader sees that shethinks that even adults like her mom sometimes need to cry. A first personpoint of view helps readers understand Rachel’s insightful view of the agingprocess, exposing her intelligence as well as her feelings with events in herlife.
More toward middle of the story online 30 Rachel says “Only today I wish I didn’t have eleven years rattling insideof me like pennies in a tin Band-Aid box” which is considered to be a metaphor whichis one her metal thoughts or feeling going through her head this is due to thefact that Mrs. Price forces her to put the red sweater that she claims belongsto her. She uses this literary device to have the reader understand and imaginethemselves in that little girls shoes it’s like having a phobia or anxiety, sometimes you might here the phrase “I have butterflies in my stomach, so theauthors main intent as I can seem to understand is that she wants the reader tocommunicate and connect with the story and make the reader put themselves inthe character’s shoes.Cisneros seems to be a very descriptiveand emotional kind of writer for example on line 105 Rachel says “My face isall hot and spit coming out of my mouth because I can’t stop the little animalnoises combining out of me until there are no more tears coming out of me
