Investigation of rejected, discarded or withdrawn antibiotics for new indications:The repurposed strategy is now-a-days widening throughout the world and mostscientists are looking to investigate side uses of present drugs even forantibiotics. In this respect, start-up industries or companies can pick thischance to generate new, effective and bacterial-resistance evading antibiotics.
For instance, daptomycin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic forsaken due to itshigher toxicity by one company and now it has become primarily medicine forserious gram-positive bacterial infections in a different regimen by anothercompany. Repurposed approach, in the case of antibiotics could be an important approachto complete the task of bacterial resistance. Public education, public awarenessand public health: Public education and awareness aboutantibiotics and antibiotic-resistance can improve quality of life and leave agood healthy impression among people. The knowledge about antibiotics and antibiotic-resistanceshould be initiated at school levels or such programs should be run bycolleges, institutes, or universities in both rural and urban areas, that awareto public regarding appropriate use and resistance of antibiotics and how canwe evade from any infection? ; for example 1) an e-Bug program is regulated byPAN-European regulatory bodies to educate children and their parents about the considerationof antibiotic uses and their resistance development; 2) Antibiotic AwarenessDay (AAD) is run in Canada and Europe, annually; 3) Get Smart: When AntibioticsWork, a program regarding antibiotics uses awareness, developed by the CDC inthe United States. In India, such type of programs should be made and alsostrictly regulated because India is going to be the first country in few years, which will have the highest antibiotic-resistance cases and at that time therewill be no measures to overcome such type of situations.
This is the time totake such mandatory actions by Indian government and Non-governmentorganizations (NGOs) that can mitigate this problem. Ina nutshell, antibiotic-resistance is a hot topic of today’s and an urgentlysolving problem for maintaining public health because it is spreading everywhereand leading to ineffectiveness of antibiotic treatment and more death thannon-infectious diseases. Hence, before using antibiotics we should have atleast, knowledge regarding general precautions and their appropriate uses. We shouldalso consider the recommendations from any health, regulating bodies such asthe WHO, the CDC, the US FDA, the EMA (European Medical Agency), the CDSCO (CentralDrugs Standard Control Organization) etc., about the exact and appropriate usesof antibiotics, how and when to take antibiotics. Designing and synthesizing ofsuch antibiotics that are broad spectrum and active against multidrug-resistantbacteria for example ?-lactam-resistant bacteria, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcusaureus (MRSA) etc., can be an important step to combat antibiotic-resistance.The main idea to tackle the problem is that awareness and specific educationamong people regarding antibiotics and their resistance and getting ideas frompeople by themselves too.
