Itis said that 20 percent of the companies in any industry make 80 percent of theprofits because they have great leadership, superior products and services, sharpenedtechnology, and a better future. These are the companies where you want towork. For a moment pause and think hypothetically, what if this same logicapplied to individuals also? Can we say that 20 percent of the people in acompany in any industry make 80 percent of the profits? Now assuming this istrue, where do we want to stand? Needless to say, each one of us would want aseat in the 20 percent chesterfield and why not! More so in HR, the ways andmeans to be on the rise in a meteoric and transformative world, takes a lot ofcommitment, engagement and responsibility. Firstly, ask for more until you get it! The future belongs to askers and one of thesecrets to move ahead is to continually ask for more responsibility, comeforward and volunteer for every assignment.
In this world of work, we are nothere to do only what is asked of us, rather our job is to keep asking for more, and, whenever we are given a new responsibility, to fulfil it quickly and well.We need to develop a reputation for being the kind of person who is given theresponsibility whenever someone wants to get something done quickly.Secondly,I firmly believe that hard work coupled with right attitude makes all thedifference. And the most critical determinant of positive attitude is how well wefunction under stress.
Being positive when things are going well is perhaps nota key indicator, but maintaining that attitude in times when things are not goingwell and demonstrating to oneself and to everyone else what you are really madeof is what takes you places. Thirdly,I am a firm believer in putting those extra fruitful hours at work when needed,if we really are envisioning success at an early age. This auxiliary investmentis required at a primeval age for it to bear fruits. And this can happen verysimply, either by coming in an hour earlier or staying an hour later. It might expandyour day slightly but it will magnify and aggrandize your careertremendously. Lastly, work all the time you work.
Taking time out for playing games on the computer, making personal phone calls, reading newspaper, chatting about latest cricketmatches or television series can be avoided as much, if we want to put ourcareer into the fast track mode in the embryonic and inceptive stages. If workdemands, sometimes it is fine to stretch on particular days and perhapssacrifice that “sitting down for dinner with family” time.Thefuture belongs to the askers and at a young age, personally, in my journey Ihave followed the above simple rules starting at a very young age.
The evolution from a Management Trainee in myorganization, where I joined 11 years back in 2006 to being positioned in theSenior Management role, leading the Global Talent Management and Engagement forthe company spread across 9 countries and 43 locations, required prioritizationand expenditure of physical, emotional and cognitive resources. It is importantto create a brand for yourself and take steps everyday to enhance the brand andcreate a brand promise. Be it top talent availability, talent alignment, progressive policies, governance, technology, management of people cost, employee value proposition, diversity and inclusion, learning and successionplanning, compensation, or enhancement of employer brand, HR systems should bemanaged in a way that is congruent with the organizational strategy. Letus be accountable not only for what we do but for the results we are providing– from providing perceived value to demonstrating actual value to the business! And rising on an expedited career path for an HR professional will not be afar.
