Man’s Great Dilemma

The true nature of man has been a well-debated topic over many millenniums. Humans argue over what they believe what their real nature is. There are many different views and aspects we can look at; for example, in the novel Anthem by Ayn Rand, she believes that the human person needs to be selfish in order to live freely, or else the world will be filled with entire societies that are contained with equal people. Also, William Golding, the author of Lord of the Flies, believed that the true nature of man was savage, because without civilization, man believes it has no boundaries. Man’s true nature has many different aspects: proud, selfish, and individualistic, because in each of the authors’ books, it explains each aspect very fluently. The trait of pride is seen in each of the novels, epic poems, and plays we have read, but it can be especially be seen in The Odyssey, Lord of the Flies, and The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian.

Odysseus mostly portrays Pride, in the Odyssey, because he would not let the Cyclops go without him knowing his real name. In Lord of the Flies, Jack would like to take over and lead the rest of the boys. Junior portrays Pride in True Diary, because of Mr. P, which pushed him to make a better life for himself, motivates him. Odysseus outbursts his full name and home country to Cyclops: “Kyklops, if ever mortal man inquires how you were put to shame, and blinded, tell him Odysseus, raider of cities, took your eye: Laertes’ son, whose home’s on Ithaka!” (Homer 160). As a result of Odysseus’ pride, Poseidon, Cyclops’ father, cursed Odysseus’ travel home, which cost him twenty years of his life out on the sea. This trait is obviously portrayed as being demeaning to the nature of man.
