          Soldiers
enrolled in professional military learning courses could meet periodically with
fellow peers and instructors though group discussions, problem-solving
scenarios, feedback discussions, or attend lectures. These grouping allow
training soldiers socially experience and share knowledge and skills.

            With
the combination of discussion boards, journals, or social media, group learning
and interaction, live or virtual, is the heartbeat of self-paced learning
courses because it allows knowledge through students interacting with each
other. Moreover, the instructor is the guiding force of the student through
his/her feedback.

            In
conclusion, a summative assessment of learning and skill development should be
given to the soldier in some form of an exam or capstone.

Applying

            Technology-based
learning can be initiated through a variety of platforms such as blended and
distance learning or teacher-centered courses. The government has applied
technology-based learning in the workforce, schools, and it’s military.

            Federal
and state government has focused its attention on technology-based learning
because of the low cost of training and professional development training in
the workforce; education; and current, on-demand training for professional
military training and other government employees.

Professional Military Training Technology Plan

            The
professional development plan formulates the actions, outline, and timeframes
that will impact the achievement of goals and objectives that will lead to
professional growth and student learning. The action steps may be subject to
several aspects of professional development. These activities may involve a
timespan a 12 months or less. Some may be completed in a year or more. A
general description of planned activities should be addressed in the
professional plan with other added activities to be included in the plan for
assessment. Below is an example of a professional development plan with two
focuses and two goals determined from a self-assessment of personal improvement
and the improvement of student performance:

Action Plan

            Based on the problem of
face-to-face training in the National Guard, this plan will focus on
technology-based, self-paced training for soldiers

Expand
Computer-Based Technology by:

o  
Creating
lessons, projects, and activities that implement software for real-life
simulations

Working with Instructional
Technology Advisor to create an approved list of training modules. Incorporating interactive
multimedia technology. Use videoconference lessons.

·        
Improve
Educational Technology Training Strategies by:

o   Reducing the amount of time spent
on whole unit instruction and increasing time spent working with individual
instruction.

Using technology to assess
student work. Creating and posting assessments, feedback, video
conferences and using rubrics.

Conclusion

          Choosing the appropriate technology is a method of using
technology to achieve a personal or career learning goal that involves the interaction
of the learners it is tailored to serve. By far, learner involvement is the key
to its success or failure.

            Self-paced learning
is a major way to implement learner-centered and adaptive learning methods that
are related to not only the National Guard, but any military branch. As the
military and its different branches search to improve training resources,
self-paced learning can provide some cost-efficient courses, and make sure quality
educational experiences impact all soldiers.

            Self-paced
learning courses can fit and adapt instruction to tailor to the needs of
students while simultaneously using the classroom as a meaningful environment
for discussion, activities, and peer interactions geared toward objectives of
the course and learning goals. In addition, self-paced learning can provide
challenges that are expected of a learner-centered environment.

            Blended
learning is implementing technology-based learning in learning courses to
improve teaching for teachers and learning for students by engaging both
teacher and learner in instruction styles that are not typically traditional or
effective in a traditional learning setting.

            The
National Guard must maintain its ability to function as an operational entity.
This can only be done by maintaining combat-experienced soldiers and
commanders, generating and maintaining individual and unit readiness through
expert training and management, and sharpening the professionalism of its
soldiers and commanders. Technology-based learning will help combat the
inconvenience of professional military training for those soldiers who would
benefit from individualized training.
