Stem cell therapy has and will
continue to be an emerging new approach in almost every major hospital/
research center through-out the medical industry.  Stem cell therapy provides an immense amount
of medical benefits for many different fields including: finding potential
cures for MS, Alzheimer’s, many forms of cancer, burns, and spinal cord
injuries. The research of stem cell therapy is growing significantly within the
burn ICU’s at major hospitals (John Hopkins University, 2016). Severe burn
victim researchers have a growing interest in stem cell therapy. Researchers
have found that burn stem cell therapy is beneficial for the: replacement of
damaged skin, immune system suppression, quicker recovery time, inflammation,
decrease in pain, and the  enhancement of
wound healing (Costagliola, Artiyeh, 2016).

One of the biggest focuses is wound
healing. The process of wound healing from stem cells can be performed by a
simple application of cells to the affected area. Depending on how severe the
burns are, this is non-invasive procedure done in the patient’s hospital room (Lee
K.H, 2000). The doctor or nurse will clean the burn area and then use a
specific cell spray, which contains a fibrin sealant. The fibrin sealant is
then immediately followed by a dressing (Phillips, October 11,2017). The
process of covering the cells, creates a temporary dressing, which will enhance
the homing of the cells and signaling of cell paracrine. In more severe cases
done in the operating room, the fibrin sealant will then be covered by a skin
graft (Phillips, October 11,2017). The procedure needs to happen immediately
after the debridement of the patient or it will not treat the area appropriately.
Delays in treating the burn wounds can significantly worsen patient’s pain, delay
overall healing time, and increase infection and overall scarring.

Stem cell research is in its early
stages of development, even though there has been significant advances in the
market. Throughout the continuous growing process, there still continues to be
controversies.  The biggest controversy that
arises from the research is obtaining of the embryonic stem cells.  In order for the embryonic stem cells to be
used, there is a destruction process of the blastocysts. These are specifically
formed from fertilized -laboratory human eggs. For those who believe that life
begins at conception, like The Catholic Church, it completely goes against
their firm beliefs. In some opinions, the blastocyst is a human life and to
destroy the blastocyst is immoral and completely looked down upon.  

Although this is still occurring, researchers
have found different ways to obtain different stem cells (Phillips, October
11,2017). Stem cells can be obtained from cord blood or by the manipulation of cells
in order to put the cells back into the reusable development phase. Use of
adult-derived stem cells, from skin, tissues, blood, and cord blood, will change
the way that people look at stem cell research.  These ways will not destroy a life at
conception and will allow people to be more open about the research. Even
though there are a lot of controversies with stem cell research, it can completely
change the medical field, and can even begin to save lives.
