The Death penalty has been around forages. In the Roman empire prisoners were thrown into an arena and had to fightto the death against lions and other wild animals. France become famous for theirguillotine usage and countries in the middle east were known to stoning peopleto death. Nowadays most of these countries do not use these capital punishmentanymore, nonetheless death penalty still exists as of today in the UnitedStates of America. It is time for America to realize what it is doing and to discontinuethe death penalty. Firstly, death penalty is irreversible.
After execution, there is no going back. Thismay lead to people dying for crimes they did not commit. An example of this isa Texas man named Cameron Todd Willingham. He was executed in Texas in 2004 forallegedly setting a fire that killed his three daughters. After his execution, evidence revealed that Willingham did not set the fire that caused the death ofhis daughters. Sadly it was too late.Secondly, the deathpenalty does not deter murder.
A study done by the Ohio State University College of Medicine and PublicHealth has shown that people do not second guess their action knowing theymight be sentenced to death. Murder is usually an act of passion. Thisindicates that the killer did not premeditate his crime.
Most murders are aresult of an escalated situation. Therefore the death penalty is not a fittingpunishment when arguing it should scare off potential murderers. It onlyapplies on a small group that has premeditated the murder. They however, tendto commit it no matter what punishment. The deathpenalty additionally breaks one of the most basic human right: the right tolife. According to the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights, everyone hasthe right to life.
When one person is sentenced to death, his right to life istaken away from that person. It also violates the right not to be subjected totorture and other cruel, inhumane or degrading treatment or punishment.Furthermore, the death penalty undermines human dignity which is inherent toevery human being. With many consagainst the death penalty, It is time for the United States of America to officiallydiscontinue the death penalty in all the states.
