The two main
wastes that are described in this case study which need to be reduced or
possibly eliminate are Material flow and the waiting time between the two
processes.

 

The material
flow line has to be reduced to the proposed extent so that the flow of the product
moves faster than actual and the waiting time of the products between different
processes can be reduced to some extent. The whole process and the waiting
times are described below.

 

v  Material Flow:

 

The
transportation of materials for both the products that needed to attain the
final product are mentioned in the below table. The distance is measured in the
meters (m).  From the above,
it is clearly seen that manufacturing of Beams it is covered 355 meters and 437
meters for Pallets. v  Waiting Times: In any manufacturing
sector, the waiting time and the transportation of material from inventory to
processing or any other unnecessary movement of the product which doesn’t add
any value to the product is considered as WASTE.  From the attached
case study we can see more waiting times between the cube saw task and phytosanitary
treatment in Pallets manufacturing as high as 76 hours and the similar process in
Beams manufacturing with the higher waiting times between the rip task and
phytosanitary treatment as close to 18 hours which is a huge loss of time and
it is non-value added.  After the analysis of the waiting
times in the material flow, it is then moved to the value flow analysis of the
process.v  Value Time: The value time of the product is
the price that the customer is willing to pay for the final product.In Pallets Manufacturing the task
that adds more value to the product is the phytosanitary treatment and the
pallet assembly task. Similarly, In Beam Manufacturing
the task that adds more value to the product is the phytosanitary treatment and
the cut rail task. v  Actual VSM: From the
actual VSM formula, {Efficiency Index = VAT/ Lead Time} if the index is equal
to 1, the process is 100% efficient and the value is added to the product.  

Further calculating
the takt times of the pallets and beam manufacturing it is observed 54min and
24min for each product and the remaining 94.8% and 88.8 % are actually wastes
which don’t add any value.
