The school that I would create for tomorrow’s students is a fun and active one. I am a big advocate of music and dance and would really love to incorporate those into my preschool. I believe that the arts are extremely important for children as it is a way for them to express themselves if they are unable to do so verbally. It also encourages children to think critically as well as support physical development. The name of my preschool would be My preschool is going to be a charter school which means that it will receive funding from the district and state according to attendance. It will also hold fundraisers to help the school out with any financial needs. Mission Statement: Inspire the whole child to reach their full potential – spirit, mind, and body – in a quality learning environment.
I envision a preschool with lots of free space, music, dance, and crafts. I am a big fan of the Montessori and Reggio style and therefore would have a preschool that is a combination of both philosophies. The classroom is scaled to their size meaning all furniture, sinks, counters, etc. are reachable to the children.
The preschool I create will have a fun and safe environment to grow and explore. A very much hands-on learning environment with age-appropriate activities that allow the children to move at their own pace individually, with a peer, or in groups. With the Montessori philosophy, my preschool classroom will have couches and pillows for those who want to have a quiet area to be alone as well as a large open area where group activities can be performed and desks/tables for the smaller groups. The outdoor area will follow a similar pattern with many different areas for the children to either interact with one another or have some time to themselves. The preschool will also obtain the Reggio Emilia philosophy because teachers will be observing and recording their students so they are able to reflect and help children develop and expand their social and academic potential. The child to teacher ratio will be 1:12 with a classroom for 24 students and 2 teachers along with teacher aides and/or parents/volunteers.
Jitterbug Preschool welcomes all children no matter what race, religion, or disability. Because children love to move, the preschool will incorporate music and dance into daily activities to activate the body and mind. By doing so, the children build balance, coordination, self-regulation skills and creativity. Teachers will teach a new dance routine as well as allowing the children to “free dance” which helps children learn how to follow instructions but also allows them to express themselves.
The teachers will implement the Montessori and Reggio philosophy. Montessori curriculum will be implemented because the rate of the child’s learning process will not be determined by their age and the Reggio approach is implemented by using music, dance, and arts/crafts to help teach the children how to use these symbolic languages in everyday life. The teachers at this preschool are just as valuable as the students which means they will be treated with the utmost respect. The teachers working at this preschool are extremely passionate about their job and absolutely love the children that they work and play with every day. Because of this, these teachers deserve to be making a minimum annual income of $75,000. The teachers will have complete support from the faculty, parents/volunteers, and community. In a perfect world, parents are extremely involved with their children and the preschool.
Helping out whenever possible, however; this is unrealistic. Therefore, teachers will reach out to parents via email or an app to give the parents daily updates. They will be informed on whether or not their child ate and how much as well if they took a nap and for how long. I want the parents to feel as much involved and in the know as possible even if they are unable to participate in the classroom. The preschool will make sure that every parent is aware of all different types of support that is provided either from the preschool itself or within the community.
I expect children to thoroughly enjoy and thrive at Jitterbug Preschool. The children will gain physical, language, social-emotional, and cognitive skills while playing and having fun in a safe environment.
