The subject of business has always been an interest of mine. It first appealed to me when I started studying it in school in S3. It was very basic then, but it became one of my favourite subjects. Now, at the end of my school career, I have a chance to study it at a more higher level in university.
It really interests me because it includes many branches such as accountancy, statistics and management which relate to the skills I have. I want to further develop these skills and use them to achieve my goal of completing a masters degree in a business course, thereafter using this degree to become involved in the world of work. I am looking forward to beginning this journey from school to employment through higher education in university. In my sixth year of school, I am now doing an advanced higher and a higher course, having done 6 higher courses in fifth year.
Having a goal of going to university has motivated me throughout these years to put in effort to get the qualifications at the required level. I am also currently doing the Glasgow University Top-Up program which has so far given me an idea of how higher education works and what is involved. At the end if this program, I will also have developed and improved skills such as essay writing, critical thinking and time management. I have also done the Access program in S5 in which I wrote an essay on the topic of accounting, that has also improved the quality of my essay writing and has helped me in my SQA exams. In 2016, I completed a week of work experience at an IT company. Although it was not related to the courses and subjects I am interested in, it gave me a brief idea of what goes into a company and what is required of all the employees and managers, to help the company run well. I think that university can also prepare me for the world of work, as there are situations and tasks that are like what is required in employment, such as working with different types of people, planning and organisation.
I have also been to workshops to learn more about the subject of business, namely accounting, and the opportunities that come with doing a course in business. I have also enjoyed the subject of mathematics, which is why I am currently studying it at the advanced higher level, having completed higher in S5. It has given me skills that are useful in the subject of business, especially accounting, such as complex problem solving and analysis.
As well being dedicated to academics and putting in effort to go to university, I also take part in extra-curricular activities. I am involved in sports both in and outside of school, playing basketball for a club; Glasgow Rens, in the national league as well playing for my school team. I go to training sessions 4 times a week and play 1 or 2 games every week.
This has taught me how to manage my time well and on how to divide my tasks throughout the day, which I can use in university life. I am also involved in coaching basketball in my school to younger players as well as learning from other players. This has given me opportunities to meet new people and work with them. It has also given me skills such as planning and efficient team working.
In addition to that, I am undertaking a sports leader coaching course in school that gives me the chance to work and lead groups of different people and helping them improve their respective skills in sports. I am bilingual, being fluent in English and Urdu; reading, writing and speaking. This also opens more opportunities for me as I can communicate and understand people of different cultures and ethnicities. In university, I plan to work to the level that is required of me and be dedicated to my goal of completing my degree.
