The Welcome Table was one of the many short stories that I chose to analyze. “The omniscient technique Is used In this story and Is particularly effective In allowing the reader to understand the old woman’s predicament and how she, and the others, dealt with it” (Glutton, 2010). This is a story that is being told in third person, it switches from the white person side to the old black lady side. In the story of The Welcome Table, there was an old black lady that had put on some church clothes for Sunday that appeared to be ran down.
After putting on her clothes the old lady alkyd a long way in the freezing cold to attend a church that was full of white people. When the old lady finally made It to the church she took a break from the long walk on the church steps before going Inside the church. When the old lady finally went into the church the reverend of the church stopped her to let her know that she was in the wrong church, but the old lady walked right past the reverend in a hurry.
When she finally got into the church the old lady set on the first bench from the back looking at the stained glass window, she had notices that the church was gust as cold as it was outside. This is when everyone in the church stared at her as if she was a piece of trash, but the lady paid the people of the church no mind and set there quietly. There was an usher In that church that was sent back to ask the lady to leave but the old lady stayed there and pay him no mind. This is when the white women inside the church took this as personal insult and feels threatened about the old black lady being at their church so the told there husbands to throw the old lady out.
After being thrown out of the church the old lady started to sing a sad song. As the lady was looking down the street she saw something that was Interesting to her coming her way. When It had gotten closer to her the old lady noticed that what and who It was coming her way It was Jesus. This story captured my interest, because after reading it I felt so sorry for the old black lady and how the white people of that church treated her. Being in church no matter what color you are no one should ever be treated the way that these white people treated her. Even though the story seemed to be a sad one, the old lady had anally got to meet the one and only person she has always want to meet, JESUS.
The literary words that I chose for this story are Tone, Image, and Imagination.I felt that the tone of this story was a very sad, because this old lady didn’t seem to have much at all in life and just want to go to a church also the way the white people treated this old lady like she was Just a piece of trash. Another tool that was used Is imagination, because the author made you Imagine that you were there with the old lady and also made you feel that something should have been done so that the lady would be able o stay in the church.
Also image was another key term in this story, because the author gave you a distinct image in how the old lady looked and also what she was wearing.
